9. SELF-TRANSCENDENCE :

Having known this Truth, what do the sages? What have they to do with these things here, when their Atman is the universe? They are above these three desires which have a sway over the universe: Desire for progeny; desire for wealth; desire for world. They have no desire for name, fame, power or anything else that is relative. The Atman is the universe; the entire universe from which one derives satisfaction is the Self. There is no need for trying to obtain satisfaction from external things.

Here comes the need for Vairagya, dispassion. Since everything is the Self, nothing is to be desired. Vairagya should be the outcome of Viveka, proper understanding. It should net be the result of mere failure in life. Dispassion should be the result of mature knowledge. After having known the nature of Truth, Brahmanas, the sages, renounce the whole world of sense-experience. They do not merely abandon one part of the world and go to another part of it. They withdraw their consciousness from objective perception. Vairagya or dispassion is dissatisfaction with everything that is perceived with the senses or the mind, and being content with what is known directly through the innermost consciousness.

We know that our Self is the basis of the external universe. It can be said to be the Ultimate Cause of all things. When one knows-the cause, one knows its effects, also. When I know Myself in Truth, I know the whole universe. The whole universe is the body of God. It is the existence or being of God. We foolishly think that the universe is material in nature, because we look at it with our physical eyes. Matter is Spirit objectified. If its is not objectified, then, one can know that it is spiritual in nature. Materialist philosophies are the result of sense-perception,. The universe is identical with the innermost consciousness of oneself ; this is what the Upanishads teach. Because the universe is spiritual in nature, it becomes possible for us to have a relation with what we experience objectively.
