Invocatory Prayer of Upanishad
From: Atharvana Veda

Santhi Mantram withtranslation :
1 om bhadram karnebhih shrunuyaama devaah; = Om. What is always auspicious, with our ears may we hear, O ye Gods.
2 bhadram pashyema akshabhih yajatraah; = What is always auspicious, may we see with our eyes, O Worshipful Ones.
3 sthiraih angaih tushtu-vaagam sah; = With our limbs hale and hearty, may we live offering our praises unto Thee.
4 tanoobhih vyashema devahitam yad aayuh. = With our body, may we have our full lifespan (to live) for the benefit of the Gods.

5 swasti nah indrah vriddha-shravaah; = May Indra, the ancient and famous, bless us!
6 swasti nah pooshaa vishwa-vedaah; = May the Sun (Pooshan), the all-knowing, bless us!

8 swasti nah brihaspatih dadhaatu. = May Brihaspati protect our spiritual wealth!

INVOCATORY PRAYERS of BHASHYA ( Explanation }
From: The Bhashyakara, Sri Shankaracharyaji with translation :
1 prajnaana amsha prataanaih sthira-chara-nikara, vyaapibhih vyaapya lokaan; = That Viswa, a diffusion of unchanging Consciousness, by which is experienced (in the waking state) all that moves or does not move; by which is pervaded all levels of the human being;
2 bhuktvaa bhogaan thavishthaan, punah api dhishanah, udbhaasitaan-kaama-janyaan; = That Taijasa which is the enjoyer of objects again and again (in the dream state), produced by the intellect, and born of desire;
3 peetvaa sarvaan-visheshaan, swapiti madhura-bhung, maayayaa bhojayan nah; = That Praajna, having drunk all varieties of objects, then in the deep sleep state enjoys pure Bliss, all the while through Maya being shielded from us;
4 maayaa-samkhyaa-tureeyam, param-amritam-ajam, brahma yat-tannatosmi. = That “Fourth”, as termed from Maya’s viewpoint, is supreme, immortal and birthless – to That Brahman do I bow down!

B. From the Cosmic or Universal Viewpoint with translation :
5 yo vishwaatmaa vidhija-vishayaanpraashya bhogaan thavishthaan; = That Virat which identifies Itself with the universe, and enjoys gross objects during cosmic waking created by the Karma of virtue and vice;
6 pashchaat chhaanyaan, swam-ativibhavaan, jyotishaa svena sookshmaan; = That Hiranyagarbha which again experiences through its own light, by Its own volition, the subtle objects of enjoyment in cosmic dream;
7 sarvaan-etaan, punah api shanaih, swaatmani sthaapayitvaa; = That Ishwara which, all these projections It once again promptly withdraws into Itself during cosmic sleep;
8 hitvaa sarvaan-visheshaan, vigatagunaganah, paatvasau nah tureeyah. =That Brahman which, freed from all attributes by discarding every distinction and difference – May That “Enlightened State” ever protect us!
