"Atha adhi-jyotisham; agnih pUrva rupam;

adityah uttara rupam; apah sandhih;

vaidyutah sandhanam;  iti adhi-jyotisham."

Translation :


atha adhi-jyotisham;     =  Now the teaching concerning the “Lights”:

agnih purva rupam;      =  FIRE - is the first letter;

adityah uttara rupam;   =  SUN - is the last letter;

apah sandhih;              = WATER - is the rallying point;

vaidyutah sandhanam;  =  LIGHTNING - is the link;

iti adhi-jyotisham.         = This is the meditation on to the “Lights”.
