Mantram - 1.1.27 : Response 3 : Wealth & Long Life Need No Boon

Nachiketas continues:

1 

Na vittena tarpaneeyah manushyah   =  Man cannot be satisfied with wealth alone.

2 

lapsyaamahe vittam   =  I  shall surely get all the wealth I need

adraakshma chet tvaa;  =   that I have seen and met you.

3 

jeevishyaamah  =  I shall also remain alive

yaavat eeshishyasi  =   for as long as you remain in power (as you are my friend).

4 

varah tu me varaneeyah  =  Hence, the boon that is worth praying for by me

sah eva.  =  is ‘That’ alone. (i.e. the one concerning the Self)

The things offered by Yama can be had even without needing a boon to obtain them.

They depend upon one’s Prarabdha Karma. Nachiketas wisely wishes to spend his boons

only on that which is not obtainable in any other way. Nachiketas turns out to be a good, 

shrewd businessman, too!
