THE SYLLABLES OF “OM”

Upanishad Section 3:

Mantram - 10 - “U” – The Second Letter: TAIJASA :

Its Representation :

1a sapnah sthaanah;   =  Having the dream state as its sphere,

1b taijasah;   =  is Taijasa, (the second Quarter);

1c u-kaarah dviteeyaa maatraa.   =  He is ‘U’, the second letter of Om.

Its Similarities :

2a utkarshaat;  =   i) its excellence or superiority,

2b ubhaya-tvaat vaa;   =  ii) and it being in between the other two.

Its Results:

3a utkarshati ha vai jnaana santatim;  =   i) He heightens to a superior knowledge,

3b samaanah cha bhavati;  =   ii) he becomes equal to all,

3c na asya abrahmavit kule bhavati;  =   iii) and none in his lineage remains ignorant.

4 yah evam veda.   =  One who knows thus, (gets the above result).

Mantram - 11 : “M” – The Third Letter: PRAJNA

Its Representation :

1a sushupta sthaanah;  =  Having the deep sleep state as its sphere,

1b praajnah; is Prajna,  =  (the third Quarter);

1c ma-kaarah triteeyaa maatraa.   =  He is ‘M’, the third letter of Om.

Its Similarities :

2a miteh;   =  i) it “measures” (the other two states);

2b vaa, apiteh.   =  ii) and in it all the states merge, get absorbed.

Its Results :

3a minoti ha vaa idam sarvam;  =   i) He is able to know the real nature of world;

3b apeetih cha bhavati;   =  ii) He comes to realize he is the Self of all.

4 yah evam veda.  =   One who knows thus, (gets the above result).
