MANDUKYA UPANISHAD with GAUDAPADA’S KARIKA : 17 - Swami Advayananda ji.

Chinmaya Mission

Chinmaya Mission Ahmedabad celebrated the auspicious occasion of Rath Yatra on 20th June with splendor and devotion. A special puja was performed for all three deities - Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadraji. In the evening, the deities commenced their journey in a wooden chariot specially made in Jagannath Puri, Odisha. They were warmly welcomed by devotees at various locations around the temple premises.

The Bhagavan received a special aarti and was offered naivedya. Devotees sang kirtans, played garba, and the temple resonated with the chants of "Jai Ranchhod Makhanchor" and "Krishna Murari Jai Krishna Murari." After an hour and a half, the Yatra concluded at the temple, leaving all the devotees present feeling His divine presence in their hearts. They offered prayers for increased devotion and spiritual connection.

MANDUKYA UPANISHAD

With Part -1/4 of Goudapada's Karika

Agama Prakarana - "The Scriptural Treatise"

=========================================================================

THE “FOURTH” QUARTER – TURIYA

THE SYLLABLES OF “OM”

Upanishad Section 3:

Mantras - 8-12.

Post - 17.

=========================================================================

Mantram - 12 : ‘Amaatra’ – The Fourth Letter: TURIYA

Its Representation :

1a amaatra chaturthah;  =  The “partless” Om is the Fourth Quarter;

1b avyavahaaryah;  =  It is beyond all conventional dealings;

1c prapancha upashamah;  =  It is the limit of the negation of the phenomenal world;

Its Similarities :

2a shivah;  =  It is all-Auspiciousness, all-Blissful;

2b advaitah;  =  It is the One without a second; the Non-Dual Reality;

2c evam omkaarah aatmaa eva;;  =  This Om is verily the same as the Atman or Self within;

Its Results :

3 samvishati aatmanaa aatmaanam;  =  The Self realises itself through the Self;

4 yah evam veda.  =  he who knows thus, (gets the above result).

========================================================================

The line-by-line meanings are as given above, and tie up with the Bhashya.

1a The silence of the Turiya Quarter is not separate from the other three Quarters,

but underlies them also. Beneath the sound of A, U and M, there is the underlying silence

which supports them. Note that this silence is not just that which we notice between Om’s,

but also that which we do not so easily notice during the sound of the other three syllables.

In other words, Turiya, the Fourth Quarter actually runs through the first three Quarters. It

is the basis and foundation of the three states.

CONCLUSION

The Bhashya’s Concluding Comments :

The Bhashya makes the following closing remarks on the final Upanishadic Mantram :

A/ The knower of Brahman, who has realized the highest Truth, has entered into the

Self by burning away the 3rd state of latency (dormant Vasanas are all burnt). Henceforth, he

is not born again, as there are no Karmas to cause a further birth.

B/ In Turiya, there are no latent Samskaras to cause another entry into Samsara.

When once a snake has been recognized to be falsely superimposed on the rope, it is never

again seen as a snake to the enlightened person.

An Inquiry into the Nature of the ‘Seer’ (Drg) and the ‘Seen’ (Drsya)

Also known as Vakya Sudha, the nectar of the Mahavakyas, this is a Vedanta treatise of 46 verses that explore the identity of Jiva and the infinite reality Brahman.

Using techniques of logical thought development and discrimination (Viveka), Sri Adi Sankaracharya leads us to our true nature. The knowledge of who we really are is the key to unconditional bliss and peace.

C/ To those who have not become knowers of Brahman, due to average or not fully

purified intellects, who nevertheless still tread the path of renunciation and virtue, and are

performing the Upasanas on Om, there need be no anxiety in their case. By continuing their

Sadhana, they will in due course come to the realisation of Brahman.

Here ends the Mandukya Upanishad.
