Mantram- 2.5,2: Vijnanamaya Kosha as “Inner Self” of Manomaya Kosha
Post - 69.

Mantram- 2.5,2: Vijnanamaya Kosha as “Inner Self” of Manomaya Kosha

tasya eshah eva shaareera aatmaa; = This Vijnanamaya  indeed is the embodied self,

yah poorvasya = of the preceding self, the Manomaya.

==================================================================================

5

 The Vijnanamaya Kosha is the inner Self that controls the Manomaya Kosha,

provided it is pure enough. Otherwise, the mind has its own ways and disobeys the intellect.

Whilst the mind is considered to be a bundle of thoughts that are unprocessed and,

therefore, is indecisive by nature, the intellect processes them through its power of logic

and understanding and produces meaningful decisions from those thoughts. Hence, the

Intellect is the “inner Self” of the Mind sheath. It has the desirable power to completely

control the mind. It is superior to the mind.

============================================================================================

Mantram - 2.5.3: Changeover: Anandamaya Kosha within Vijnanamaya Kosha

tasmaat vai etasmaat = As compared with this self

vijnaana-mayaat; = made of Intelligence,

anyah aantara aatmaa = There is another self within it

aanandamayah; = made of Bliss.

tena eshah poornah. = By that (of Bliss) is this (of Intelligence) filled.

sah vai eshah = What was that (earlier), is this (henceforth).

purusha-vidhah eva. = This is also verily of the human form.

tasya purusha-vidhataam; = The human form of that (the Intelligence sheath)

anu ayam purusha-vidhah. = continues as the human form of this (the Bliss sheath).

=====================================================================================

6

Compared to this current Vijnanamaya Kosha, made of Intellect, there is the next sheath, called Anandamaya Kosha, made of Bliss, which is within the Vijnanamaya. This next

sheath is subtler than the former, pervades it entirely, and controls the Intellectual processes. It is noted in the Bhashya that this Anandamaya Kosha is a conditioned self, not the Absolute Self.

7

 So far, “this” referred to the current Kosha (Vijnanamaya) we are just finishing with, and “that” referred to the next Kosha (Anandamaya) we are going to deal with. The

Vijnanamaya Kosha is filled and exceeded all round by the Anandamaya Kosha.

Changeover: ‘Vijnanamaya’ becomes ‘Previous’; ‘Anandamaya’ becomes ‘Current’; There is no ‘Next’, as Anandamaya is the last, the subtlest sheath. Beyond the Anandamaya

Kosha lies the pure, Absolute Self or Atman. This is man’s real nature.

8

 The Bliss sheath takes the same human form as is taken by the Intellect sheath.
