MANTRAM-3.{ "Foremost  means  of  Self-realisation  seeking  the  Self  alone." }

"Nayam-atma  pravacanena  labhyo

na  medhaya  na  bahuna  srutena,

yame-vaisa  vrnute  tena  labhyah

tasyaisa  atma  vivrnute  tanum  svam."

na  =  not;

ayam  =  this;

atma  =  the  Self;

pravacaena  =  by  discourses;

labhyah  =  is  attained;

na  =  not;

medhaya  =  by  intellect,  knowledge;

na  =  not;

bahuna  =  much;

srutena  =  hearing  ( i.e,  by  learning);

yam  =  whom  ( which  Atma);

eva  =  alone;

esah  =  this  ( the  aspirant );

vrnute  =  wishes  to  attainit  with the  whole  heart;

tena  =  by  him;

labhyah  =  is  attained;

tasya  =  to  him;

esah  =  this;

atma  =  the  Self;

vivrnute  =  reveals;

tanum  =  true  nature;

svam  =  of  its  own.


"The  Self  ( Atma / Jivatma/ Paramatma)  is  not  attained through  discourses  nor  through  memorising  scriptural  texts,  nor  through  much  learning."

"It  is  gained  only  by  him  who  wishes  to  attain  it  with  his  whole  heart.  To  such  a  one,  the  Self  reveals  its  true  nature." *

*This  mantram  also  occurs  in  'Kathopanishad-- 1-2.23.
