Mantram- 2.2.3: Changeover: Pranamaya Kosha within Annamaya Kosha
============================================================================
Mantram- 2.2.3: Changeover: Pranamaya Kosha within Annamaya Kosha:
8
tasmaat vai etasmaat = As compared with this sheath
anna-rasamayaat; = made of the essence of Food,
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
anyah antarah aatmaa = there is another sheath within it
praanamayah. = made of Prana (Air).
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
9
tena esha poornah = By that (of Air) is this one (of Food) filled.
sa vai eshah (earlier), = It was that (earlier), but is this (henceforth).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
10
purusha-vidhah eva; = It is also verily of the human form.
tasya purusha-vidhataam; = The human form of that (the Food sheath),
anu ayam purusha-vidhah. - continues as the human form of this (the Air sheath).
========================================================================
8
Compared to this current Annamaya Kosha made of Food, there is the next sheath,
the Pranamaya Kosha, made of Air, which is within the Annamaya. This next sheath is
subtler than the former, pervades it entirely, and enlivens it from within.
9
So far, “this” referred to the current Kosha (Annamaya), and “that” referred to the
next Kosha (Pranamaya). Thus the line means: The Annamaya is filled and exceeded all
round by the Pranamaya Kosha.
Changeover:
‘Annamaya’ becomes ‘Previous’; ‘Pranamaya’ becomes ‘Current’;
‘Manomaya’ by implication becomes the ‘Next’. A changeover is denoted.
10
The Prana sheath takes the same human form as is taken by the Annamaya.
