Mandukya Upanishad :

Chapter-1. Agama Prakarana ( The Scriptural Treatise )

Sri Gaudapada's glossary begins :

Karika Slokam-s 1 to 9.

Mantram : 6.

"Prabhavah sarva-bhavanam satamiti viniscayah,

sarvam janayati pranas-cetomsun-purushah prthak."

prabhavah = birth (is);

sarva-bhavanam = for all objects;

satam = which are existent;

iti = thus;

viniscayah = is well established;

sarvam = everything;

pranah janayati = unmanifest creates;

cetah-amsun = conscious beings;

purushah = purusha ( The Absolute );

prathak = distinctly.

" It is well established that something can come out as an effect only from a cause that is existent ( not non-existent ). The Prana manifests all insentient things; the Purusha ( The Lord ) creates separatively the conscious beings, the egoes, in their manifold forms.."

Discussion : 1.

Here Gaudapada is getting into a digression to explain the idea of Creation. When we start our enquiery of the 'Subject', it is natural that we must first of all get ourselves well convinced that the world - of - objects is a myth created by the distortion of consciousness when it passes from the 'subject' through a mind-prism.

So long as there is this distraction, we are not in a position to withdraw our entire attention out of the false world and apply it at an enquiry intop the real realms of the 'subject' within ourselves.

Thus, it necessitates every great Master first of all to give an explanation of the how, why and wherefore of this world of objects. Following this traditional technique of the Sastra-s, Gaudapada is also indulging here, in a few mantra-s, to give us a summary of the various descriptions given by the previous Masters in explaining the world-of-objects and their creation.

To be continued ..
