The Process of Creation of the Manifold Beings and Their Unique Characteristics - Sri Aurobindo

Sri Aurobindo translates Shwetashwatara Upanishad, Chapter 5, Verses 3-4 :

1.
“God weaveth Him one net or He weaveth Him another and He maketh it of manifold meshes and casteth it abroad in this field of the body; then He draweth it in again. Also He created Yatis, great Seekers, and thus the Mighty Mind wielded the sceptre of His universal Lordship. (Or, and thus the Mighty Mind, the Master, exerciseth the sovereignty over all this creation [or, of all the Universe] ) The Sun riseth and driveth the world’s wain, then he blazeth illumining all the regions and above and below and the level grow one lustre, even so this glorious and shining God, being One, entereth upon and ruleth nature that clingeth to the womb, to each womb its nature. (Or, even so the Lord, the Shining and Glorious, being One, possesseth and ruleth the nature that cleaveth to the womb, to each kind its nature [or, possesseth various natures of wombs and ruleth over them] ).”

The Rishi of the Upanishad here is describing more of the details of manifesting the Many out of the One. When we look around us we see myriad forms and creatures, and there is a systematic and precise arrangement into families, groupings of beings with similar characteristics, even while they may differ in final details. In Western science these have been called phylum, genus, species, and science has created a chart in the form of a “family tree” to classify and organize the types of beings that have been created. Each type of being has its own role in the larger unity of the natural world, and has its own unique powers and actions, which then follow the law of cause and effect as they interact with each other and with the other forms that have been created.

At the same time, the Rishi reminds us that this is not separate from the One, but a manifestation of the One.
