Mantram - 1.5:3: Upasana 2 – On the Devatas

With Translation :

1.

bhuh iti vai agnih; = Bhuh is – FIRE;

bhuvah iti vaayuh;   = Bhuvah is – AIR;

suvah iti aadityah;  = Suvah is the – SUN;

maha iti chandramaah;= Mahah is the – MOON;

chandramasaa vaava sarvaani = It is by the MOON that all

jyoteegmshi maheeyante      =  the Gods are nourished.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bhashyam ( Vyakyanam ) :

7-8 Fire may be considered to include the elements of Water and Earth. Together

they represent the gross level of manifestation. All three of them are surrounded by Air,

which therefore represents the subtle manifestation. Subtler than even Air is the Sun, which

penetrates it and is the cause of the life-forces we see.

Now, how does the Moon relate to all these elements? We keep in mind that we are

speaking of Deities, not physical representations. The Sun is the Deity of the eyes. The Moon

is the Deity of the mind. Mind is superior to the eye. If mind is so important to us, then how

much more important is the Deity of the mind, the Moon!
