MANDUKYA UPANISHAD

with Part 1/4 of GAUDAPADA’S KARIKA

Agama Prakarana – “The Scriptural Treatise”

========================================================================

PART 1: Agama Prakarana (Mantras-29.)

THE SYLLABLES OF “OM”

Upanishad Section 3:

Mantras - 8-12

Mantram - 9: “A” – The First Letter: VISHWA

Post-13

Mantram - 9: “A” – The First Letter: VISHWA

1.Its Representation:

1a jaagarita sthaanah; = Having the waking state as its sphere,

1b vaishvaanarah; = is Vaishvanara or Vishwa, (the first Quarter);

1c a-kaarah prathamaa maatraa. = He is ‘A’, the first letter of Om.

2.Its Similarities:

2a aapteh; = i) its all-pervasiveness,

2b aadimat-tvaat vaa; = ii) and its precedence (being the first).

3.Its Results:

3a aapnoti ha vai sarvaan kaamaan; = i) He surely attains fulfillment of all desires,

3b aadih cha bhavati; = ii) and becomes foremost among all;

4 yah evam veda. = One who knows thus, (gets the above result).

========================================================================

The first three Quarters follow the same pattern as this verse. There is the

description of what is represented; followed by the significance of the order of the Quarter,

which is related in a creative way to some features of the letter. The resulting practice is

then related to the results or benefits that the correct chanting of the Quarter will surely

bring to the sincere practitioner of this Sadhana.

Symbolically, the benefits represent the growth of our evolution towards the ideal of

enlightenment on reaching the Fourth Quarter.
