Anuvaka 2.3 : From Pranamaya to Manomaya

Mantram - 2.3.2: Pranamaya Kosha as “Inner Self” of Annamaya Kosha

====================================================================================

Mantram - 2.3.2: Pranamaya Kosha as “Inner Self” of Annamaya Kosha

tasya eshah eva shaareera aatmaa; =  This Pranamaya is indeed the embodied self,

yah poorvasya. =  of the preceding self, the Annamaya.

===================================================================================

Mantram - 2.3.3: Changeover: Manomaya Kosha within Pranamaya Kosha

tasmaat vai etasmaat = As compared with this self

praanamayaat; = made of the vital Air,

anyah aantara aatmaa = there is another self within it

manomayah; = made of the Mind.

tena eshah poornah =  By that  (of Mind) is this  one (of Air) filled.

sah vai eshah =  What was that (earlier), is this (henceforth);

purusha-vidhah eva; = This  is also verily of the human form.

tasya purusha-vidhataam; = The human form of that  (the Air sheath) continues

anu ayam purusha-vidhah = as the human form of this (the Mind sheath).

 Compared to this current Pranamaya Kosha, made of Air, there is the next sheath, called Manomaya Kosha, made of Mind,  which is more subtle than the Pranamaya.

This  next sheath, being subtler than the former, pervades it entirely, and provides direction to the Pranic energies and processes. The Pranamaya is filled and exceeded all round by the Manomaya Kosha.

7

 So far, “this” referred to the current Kosha, which in this case is the Pranamaya.

We are just finishing with it. “That” refers to the next Kosha, the Manomaya, which we are

going to start dealing with. The purpose of this line is to make the “changeover”.

Changeover : The ‘Pranamaya’ changes from being ‘current’ to become ‘Previous’;

the ‘Manomaya’ moves from ‘next’ to ‘current’; and ‘Vijnanamaya’ becomes the ‘next’.

8

 The Mind sheath takes the same human form as is taken by the Air sheath.
