Mantram-12. { A  seeker  seeing  meaningless-ness  of  the  wordly  and  heavenly  pleasures  advised  to  approach  a  teacher  and  seek  "Supreme  Knowledge." }

Parikshya  lokan  karmaicitan  brahmano


nirvedam-ayan-nasty-akrtah  krtena,


tad-vijnan-artham  sa  guru-mevabhi-gacchet


samit-panih  srotriyam  brahma-nishtham.



parikshya  =   after  examining;

lokan  =  worlds  of  experiences;

katmacitan  =  gained  by  karmam;

brahmanah  =  a  brahmana  ( an  aspirant );

nirvedam  =  freedom  from  all  desires;

ayat  =  after  reflecting;

na  asti  =  cannot  be  had;

akrtah  =  that  which  is  eternal;

krtena  =  by  karmam;

tat  =  that;

vijnanartham  =  in  order  to  obtain  the  knowledge /experience;

sah  =  he;

gurum  =  preceptor;

eva  =  alone;

abhigacchet  =  ( let  him )  approach;

samit  panih  =  with  sacrificial  fuel  in  hands;

srotriyam  =  ( he  who  is )  well-versed  in  the  Veda-s;

brahma-nishtham  =  ( he  who  is )  established  in  brahmam.


"Let  a  brahmana ( an  aspirant ),  after  he  has  examined  the  worlds  gained  by  karmam,  aquire  freedom  from  all  desires,  reflecting  that  nothing  that  is  eternal  can  be  gained  by  karmam."

"Let  him,  in  order  to  obtain  the  knowledge  of  the  eternal, take  sacrificial  fuel  ( Samit )  in  his  hands  and  approach  that  preceptor  alone  who  is  well-versed  in  the  Veda-s  and  is  established  in  brahmam."

yat  =  that  which  is;
ca  =  and;

trikala  atitam  =  beyond  ( the  three  periods  of )  time;

"AGAMA PRAKARANA"

Mantram-2

"Sarvam  hyetad  Brahma,  ayam-atma Brahma,
so' yam-atma  catuspat."

sarvam - all;

hi - indded;

etat -this;

brahma - this (is)  BRAHMAM;

ayam atma brahma - this Self ( ATMA IN US ) is BRAHMAM;

sah - That ( BRAHMAM );

ayam atma - ( which is ) this Self ( ATMA IN US );

catuspat - ( is ) covered with four quarters ( PARTS ).

"All this is verily BRAHMAM. This is BRAHMAM. This JIVATMA ( ATMA WITHIN US ) has four quarters ( parts )."

Discussion-1.

In the last mantram the great Rishi summarizing his transcendental wisdom declared, "all this is, verily, "AUM".

Continuing the declaration, the Rishi is now giving a discourse to the student and he says, "all this is BRAHMAM."

Naturally, it is clear that the great Master is wanting the student to understand that AUM is BRAHMAM.

Mantram-2

"Sarvam  hyetad  Brahma,  ayam-atma Brahma,

Discussion-7.

The Absolute 'this' is then the Spiritual Center in ourselves; and since Spiritual Factor is Eternal and All-pervading, the Center in ourselves is the Center everywhere.

The individual-Self is the Universal-Self.

And hence the Sruti says, "This Atma is BRAHMAM."

This oft-quoted declaration is considered to be major text ( Mahavakyam ) by the Vedantik-seekers.
